It seems Frans Steyn, the head honcho for the Cheetahs, has had enough of near misses and not-quite-there performances. After a nail-biter against Georgia's Black Lion that ended in a 39-38 defeat, Steyn is clamoring for a full-throttle, 80-minute show of force this Sunday in Bloemfontein. Let’s just say, the gloves are off and Steyn is not here to play nice.
The Cheetahs appeared to be in command with a 21-15 lead at the break, but the tables turned dramatically post-half-time. The Black Lion roared back, snatching an eight-point lead before the Cheetahs clawed back with scores from Marko Janse van Rensburg and Prince Nkabinde. Nevertheless, a missed conversion by Cohen Jasper left the squad short of a comeback.
"At half time, I thought we were going to give them a hiding,” Steyn remarked. “And after half time, it felt like we lost energy and the urgency to finish them off – urgency to get more points, urgency in all areas of the game."
Steyn didn't mince his words about the loss reflecting deeper issues within the team that had been simmering even during the Currie Cup. "There were a lot of individual errors... we need to start winning. We want to build a nice place where everybody wants to come and play. But if we don’t win, it’s not good enough," he lamented.
"We’ve got a nice squad, good people here, and I think we let them down last week. We need to be more consistent through 80 minutes."
The urgency is palpable as the matches in the pipeline are not just about winning but building momentum and testing team dynamics ahead of the EPCR Challenge Cup. With limited games before the big league, every match is a golden opportunity to fine-tune skills and solidify combinations.
Looking ahead, the Cheetahs are gearing up for a face-off with the Lions at Ellis Park on November 20, followed by their Challenge Cup kickoff against the Exeter Chiefs on December 7. And if you're a rugby aficionado, don’t miss this Sunday’s double-header which starts with a legends match against the Bulls at 12:30 pm, followed by the main event at 3 pm. Ready your cheers and perhaps snag a cool R25k in fan prizes while you’re at it!
Clear your calendars and rally behind the Cheetahs as they look to translate Steyn's fiery demands into a winning formula on the field.
