Former England coach Clive Woodward is making a compelling case for the inclusion of young sensation Noah Caluori in England's upcoming tour against South Africa. Amidst ongoing scrutiny over Steve Borthwick’s position following a challenging Six Nations, Woodward’s advocacy for Caluori’s debut in the high-stakes environment of Johannesburg highlights a strategic push for youthful dynamism in the national squad.

In a recent column, Woodward, who is no stranger to bold selections, having debuted Jonny Wilkinson at just 18, emphasized the readiness of Caluori for international rugby. "He has been handled well to date," Woodward remarked, noting Caluori’s gradual integration into the senior setup and his impressive stint with the A team during the Six Nations. Woodward firmly believes that the time is ripe for Caluori to step up, suggesting, "I would bring him straight into the team for England's next game – the blockbuster Nations Championship clash with South Africa in July."

"He has been handled well to date…"

Woodward’s rationale is twofold: Caluori’s undeniable skill set and the necessity of testing his mettle at the highest level. Despite potential criticism for such a bold move, Woodward argues that decisions should be stripped of emotion and based purely on merit and potential impact. Caluori’s track record at Saracens, where he dazzled fans with 18 tries in nine appearances, certainly bolsters Woodward’s confidence in his capabilities.

The selection dilemma extends to other positions too. Woodward praises the form of Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, earmarking him as a starter for the summer. To accommodate Caluori, Woodward suggests a reshuffle that would see Tommy Freeman shift to outside centre, a move he believes would optimize the team’s configuration. "England have lots of good wingers," Woodward explained, advocating for a lineup that leverages both Feyi-Waboso and Caluori’s strengths to inject much-needed excitement into the team.

Woodward also referenced Australia’s stunning victory over South Africa at Ellis Park as a blueprint for England. The Wallabies' performance, characterized by aggressive and tactically astute play, could guide England to replicate such success. "If Australia can down Rassie Erasmus’ men in South Africa... then so too can England," Woodward asserted, envisioning a squad that includes Caluori alongside stars like Feyi-Waboso, Freeman, and George Furbank.

This suggested strategy not only aims to revitalize England's approach but also to provide a platform for young talents like Caluori to shine on the international stage. With the right mix of experienced heads and youthful exuberance, England could indeed turn the tide in their favor, starting with the formidable challenge in Johannesburg.
