In a bold move that's stirring up the rugby world, Dave Rennie has roped in former Scotland scrum-half Mike Blair as one of the new assistant coaches for the All Blacks. This decision by New Zealand Rugby (NZR) is seen as a significant admission that the coaching talent pool within New Zealand isn't all-encompassing anymore. Blair, who has built a formidable coaching resume since hanging up his boots in 2016, joins the All Blacks following stints in Scotland and Japan. His appointment is a clear signal that NZR is ready to break traditional boundaries by bringing in coaching expertise from outside the country.

Joining Blair in the new coaching lineup are All Blacks legend Tana Umaga and the esteemed forwards coach Neil Barnes, with Jason Ryan retained from the previous setup. This eclectic mix suggests a fresh tactical approach for the national team, spearheaded by Rennie, who seems to have the full backing of NZR to sculpt his coaching team as he sees fit. Former Maori All Black Joe Wheeler, speaking on Sky Sport NZ’s The Breakdown, didn’t mince words, stating, "That’s a massive concession from New Zealand Rugby first and foremost that they are willing to select coaches from outside of New Zealand, because we’ve always prided ourselves on the fact that we do have the best coaches in the world."

"Dave obviously rates this guy super highly."

While Wheeler admitted his limited familiarity with Blair, he recognized the buzz around Blair's analytical prowess, especially regarding his ability to dissect northern hemisphere defenses—a skill that will be crucial as he integrates his strategies with the All Blacks' attacking systems.

The challenge is significant, as Blair will need to quickly imprint his philosophy onto a team renowned for its dynamic play. "But I think the hard thing for him and the challenge he’s going to face is how he’s going to implant some of his ideology in such a short amount of time, and getting the players on the same page as what he is around, how he wants this All Black team to play in attack," Wheeler added.

Lima Sopoaga, another former All Black, echoed this sentiment on The Breakdown, highlighting both the challenge and the intensive preparation likely happening behind the scenes. "Dave Rennie is no slouch. He doesn’t bring someone all the way to New Zealand if he doesn’t believe or if they haven’t already had chats about how they want to play and what they want to do," Sopoaga commented, hinting at the strategic late-night sessions that are shaping the future of All Blacks rugby.

With such a significant reshuffle in the coaching staff, the upcoming season marks a new chapter for the All Blacks, filled with anticipation and high expectations. The blend of local and international coaching minds could very well redefine New Zealand’s approach to international rugby.
