In the eye of a storm, Stormers director of rugby John Dobson has fiercely defended his young star, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, amid a barrage of criticism following a dip in his performance. Despite a strong start to the 2025/26 United Rugby Championship, where the Stormers topped the league after initial victories, recent consecutive losses have seen a downturn in their fortunes and Feinberg-Mngomezulu's form.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who has been a standout performer since his Stormers debut in their winning 2022 URC campaign, has faced intense scrutiny. His struggles were particularly evident during the team's disappointing loss to the Lions, where he failed to replicate the form that made him a hero in the Springboks' Autumn Nations Series tour in Europe.
Dobson expressed his concerns about the negative attention surrounding Sacha.
"The noise around Sacha is a concern. He is a youngster, and there is so much emotion in the sport,"
Dobson remarked. He emphasized the playmaker's potential and resilience, baffled by the harsh criticism directed at such a promising talent.
"I just cannot understand how there can possibly be vitriol towards a guy who has such X-factor and so much promise for the Stormers and Springboks,"
he added.
Last week, Springboks attack coach Tony Brown weighed in on the young fly-half's struggles, advising him to ease the pressure on himself. Brown suggested that Feinberg-Mngomezulu should leverage his team more effectively, stating,
"Use the players around you more, don’t always try to take everyone on yourself."
This advice points to a need for a more collaborative approach rather than shouldering the burden alone.
Dobson acknowledged the wisdom in Brown's words but noted the different pressures at club level, where Feinberg-Mngomezulu has taken on a leadership role amid high expectations. "We listen to what a guy like Tony says. But it is a very different environment at the Stormers," Dobson explained. He expressed a commitment to better coaching to help Feinberg-Mngomezulu make the right decisions on the field.
The Stormers' next challenge is against the Bulls in Pretoria, a match that could prove pivotal in turning around their season and restoring confidence in their young star.
