Stormers coach John Dobson didn't mince words when he aired his grievances about the less-than-stellar conditions of the Cape Town Stadium turf before their upcoming clash with the Lions. With the field still bearing the scars of last week’s World Supercross GP event, it’s safe to say the initial excitement quickly turned into a collective groan.

“There was a very visible drop when we got here on Wednesday,” Dobson revealed during a Friday presser, painting a picture of a squad disheartened by the sight that greeted them. “You could feel the sigh of disappointment from the players when they saw it.”

While Cape Town Stadium’s COO, Louw Visagie, stood by the field’s condition, claiming it was up to scratch and met World Rugby standards, Dobson highlighted the tactical disadvantages posed by the battered pitch. “Our game model is built around applying pressure,” he explained. “We want to scrum, we want to maul, and that often requires traction. If you take that away, you take away our ability to control the game in the way we want to.”

“It’s got a chance to affect performance, the experience in the stadium and even how it looks on TV. This should be a showpiece game. You want the pitch to add to the spectacle, not take away from it.”

Dobson also acknowledged the financial realities of a multi-use stadium but emphasized the need for a better balance to preserve the quality of high-stakes matches. Stormers captain Salmaan Moerat chimed in, underscoring the importance of adapting to the conditions. “The obvious thing is the set-piece,” he noted. “We’ll have to see how it holds up on the day. The bounce of the ball will also be different, and that affects the backfield as well.”

With the local derby promising a full house, the state of the pitch could very well play a crucial role in the outcome. Fans and players alike hope for a contest that lives up to the high expectations set by such encounters, where the quality of play shines brighter than any imperfections underfoot.
