In a bold move that's stirring up the rugby world, Stephen Donald, a Rugby World Cup champion, has suggested bringing back former All Blacks head coaches Steve Hansen and Ian Foster to steer New Zealand's ship at the upcoming World Cup in Australia. With the All Blacks in a spiral of uncertainty after Scott Robertson's abrupt exit, Donald's proposal could be the jolt needed to stabilize the team's quest for global dominance.

Despite the whirlwind of speculation around Robertson’s successor, the suggestion of revisiting Hansen and Foster has caught many off guard. Both coaches have a storied history with the All Blacks, having clinched the 2015 World Cup under Hansen’s leadership, while Foster ran the show from 2019 to 2023. Currently, they're coaching in Japan, but Donald believes they could be the quick fix New Zealand Rugby is desperate for. "We’re trying to win a World Cup here," Donald emphasized on The Aftermatch with Kirst and Beav, questioning whether the powers-that-be have considered this potential "rescue mission."

"We're talking outlandish here, that’s what we do on The Aftermatch, but has that conversation been had?"

Amid the chaos, Jamie Joseph emerges as a strong contender, though his viability could be complicated by Tony Brown’s commitments to the Springboks. Donald, however, sees potential for high-caliber collaborations, hinting at a powerhouse duo if Joseph could team up with Dave Rennie in Brown’s absence.

The rugby community also buzzes about Vern Cotter, another name linked with the top job. Cotter’s recent stint with the Blues and his longstanding relationship with Joe Schmidt, who previously served as an assistant under Foster in 2022, could enhance his candidacy. "Joe all of a sudden with Vern, that would be a conversation without a shadow of a doubt," Donald noted, recognizing the strategic alliances forming within rugby’s coaching ranks.

As the search intensifies, the All Blacks face a critical period of decision-making. With the World Cup on the horizon, the next choice for head coach will not only shape the immediate future of the team but potentially redefine New Zealand rugby's legacy on the world stage.
