During his 12-game suspension, Eben Etzebeth transformed from sidelined Springbok to de facto coach, elevating the Sharks' game with his mere presence and expertise. As he gears up to rejoin the fray in the EPCR Challenge Cup’s last-16 clash against Connacht in Galway, his team feels the lift. JP Pietersen couldn't hide his enthusiasm: “Eben is back, and it’s awesome to have him back,” signaling a boost for the team that has navigated recent games without several key players.

Etzebeth, previously sidelined due to an eye-gouging incident in last year's Test against Wales, returns to fortify the Sharks’ second row. His comeback is not just a physical boost but a mental one. “Eben is a highly experienced guy and one of the great Springbok players,” Pietersen remarked, emphasizing the standard Etzebeth sets.

“He’s been professional and slotted straight in, did his job, led well and helped where he could. He’s got a standard that he holds everyone accountable to and you can see the level within the group has risen to that standard.”

Despite making 13 changes to the starting lineup that previously triumphed over Cardiff, Pietersen faces challenges with a roster hampered by injuries. Key players like Siya Kolisi and a host of backliners including Aphelele Fassi and Jaden Hendrikse remain sidelined. Nevertheless, the Sharks are not without reinforcements, as Bok props Ox Nché and Vincent Koch are fit and will be starting the game.

With the stakes high, Pietersen stresses the importance of discipline against a formidable Connacht team.

“They’re a good side. They will definitely put us under pressure holding the ball. For us, it’ll be about being disciplined in our defence … not giving penalties away and giving them territory.”

The Sharks' strategy will focus on maintaining possession and controlling the game flow to counter Connacht's aggressive play.

As the Sharks brace for a rigorous test in Galway, the return of a titan like Etzebeth is a timely enhancement. His leadership and exacting standards are set to galvanize the team, potentially steering them through the rough waters of the EPCR Challenge Cup. With Pietersen at the helm and Etzebeth back in the mix, the Sharks are poised to make a significant impact.

TEAM: Sharks starting lineup includes Eben Etzebeth, Ox Nché, Vincent Koch, and the return of wing Edwill van der Merwe.
