The Sharks are throwing Eben Etzebeth right into the fray as they face Connacht in Friday's EPCR Challenge Cup knockout round in Galway. Following a 12-week hiatus due to a suspension for a misdemeanour against Wales' Alex Mann, Etzebeth is back to bolster the Sharks' lineup. With an extensive reshuffle, Coach JP Pietersen has made 13 changes from the team that triumphed over Cardiff last week.

Despite being hit hard by injuries, the Sharks' roster is far from toothless. They're rolling out the heavy artillery, featuring not just Etzebeth but also fellow Springboks Ox Nché and Vincent Koch. However, the absence of staples like André Esterhuizen, Siya Kolisi, Bongi Mbonambi, and Grant Williams means the team has left significant firepower back in Durban.

"Injuries test the character of the squad, but it gives the next guy in the squad an opportunity. It’s a test of how you bounce back as a group,"

Pietersen noted, emphasizing the resilience of his team.

Leading the charge will be Nick Hatton from the No. 8 spot, with Makazole Mapimpi, the only other player retained from last week, taking his place on the wing. New additions like Edwill van der Merwe and the bench's promising talents like Vincent Tshituka and Ethan Hooker are expected to inject some much-needed vigor into the lineup.

"We’ve got some reinforcements back, Eben is now available and hopefully his return is a big help for us,"

said Pietersen, acknowledging the boost Etzebeth brings to the team’s dynamics.

This weekend, the Sharks' lineup reads as a roll call of agility and strength, poised to take on the challenge in Galway:

SHARKS – 15 Hakeem Kunene, 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Le Roux Malan, 12 Marnus Potgieter, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Jean Smith, 9 Ross Braude, 8 Nick Hatton (c), 7 Jannes Potgieter, 6 Tino Mavesere, 5 Deon Slabbert, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Eduan Swart, 1 Ox Nché.

Bench: 16 Ethan Bester, 17 Lee-Marvin Mazibuko, 18 Mawande Mdanda, 19 Corné Rahl, 20 Vincent Tshituka, 21 Ceano Everson, 22 Siya Masuku, 23 Ethan Hooker.

As the Sharks gear up for a pivotal clash, all eyes will be on Etzebeth's performance and the team's ability to adapt and overcome the adversities posed by their injury crisis and previous lineup changes.

The "misdemeanour" has a name . . . it's called an eye-gouge.

I hope the rest has invigorated Eben. He was a donkey for most of last season, for the Sharks and the Boks.

Not sure why the Sharks are sending out a largely B team of no-names.

Talking of names, Lee-Marvin Mazibuko is a pretty good name for a prop I reckon.
