Eddie Jones, the former England rugby head coach, has cast a critical eye over successor Steve Borthwick's recent comments and tactics leading up to the Six Nations Championship. After a promising start with a victory over Wales, England's subsequent losses to Scotland and Ireland have shattered their Grand Slam aspirations and severely dented their championship hopes, with France now leading by a substantial margin.

Borthwick, known for his usually reserved demeanor, made headlines with his early focus on the potential decider against France. Jones expressed his concerns on the Rugby Unity podcast, noting,

"I thought Steve made some very uncharacteristic comments about a title-decider against France, and looking ahead."

He speculated that the RFU might have pressured Borthwick to adopt a more provocative stance to drum up fan excitement and support.

Jones elaborated on the dangers of such forward-looking statements, explaining how they can lead to a shift in team psychology.

"They hear it and they talk to them, and they go, ‘we’ve got to get our tickets for France. Where are we staying?’ All of that happens, right, and the slight psychological change you get in the team because of that, they start to look ahead."

The impact of these distractions was evident as England struggled in their matches against Scotland and Ireland. According to Jones, the loss to Scotland was particularly damaging, allowing doubts to seep into the team's psyche. He emphasized that recovering from such setbacks requires strong leadership both on and off the field, recalling how the team began to regroup under the captaincies of Courtney Lawes and Owen Farrell.

Jones also reflected on the limited influence a coach can have during a game, recounting a conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson during a challenging Manchester United match. "I remember sitting in a game next to Sir Alex Ferguson watching Man United play and Mourinho had made his two changes. They were getting absolutely pumped and I said to him, ‘what can he do now?’ He said: ‘There’s not much he can do’," Jones shared, drawing parallels to Borthwick's situation during the Ireland defeat.

Despite the criticism, Jones pointed out that sometimes, regardless of a coach's strategy or changes, the outcome hinges on the players' performance and mental readiness on the day. As England regroups, the focus will be on internal leadership and preparation for the remaining matches of the tournament.
