Tommy Freeman and Fin Smith are just two of the eight weary warriors trudging back to Northampton Saints post-Six Nations, their bodies and spirits hammered by a brutal international run. Phil Dowson, the man at the helm, admits handling their return to the Premiership will be a bespoke job: each player's recovery and reintegration planned with precision, acknowledging the wear and tear of a disappointing tournament.

The Saints, reigning 2023/24 PREM Rugby champions, saw a significant portion of their squad don England jerseys, with Freeman, Alex Coles, Henry Pollock, and Trevor Davison pulling on the rose across all five matches. Others like Smith and Fraser Dingwall had their share of the action too. Dowson's immediate task is to assess the physical and mental fallout from England's dismal fifth-place finish, their worst performance in years.

Regulations mandate a rest period for these returning internationals, requiring them to sit out one of the next three club matches. The choice of which game to miss will be up to the clubs and players, a decision not taken lightly.

"I think they're frustrated, and I think they probably are exhausted,"

Dowson revealed, highlighting the emotional and physical toll the championship exerted on his players.

Dowson's strategy is clear: treat them as individuals, not just athletes. This means tailored recovery plans and lots of communication.

"We have to look after them on a case-by-case basis, to refresh them and get them going again for us,"

he explained, emphasizing the need for a personalized approach to managing each player's return.

One particular concern is Tommy Freeman, a player whose relentless game schedule could be edging him towards burnout. With a history of heavy involvement both for England and Northampton, managing his workload is crucial. "The last thing that Steve and I want is for Freemo to burn out or get injured or both," Dowson stated, underlining the importance of balancing immediate team needs with long-term player health.

As the Saints gear up for their next clash against Newcastle Red Bulls, the focus is clear: reintegrate these international players smoothly, ensuring they're mentally and physically primed to contribute to Northampton's campaign without risking their health. This nuanced approach might just be what keeps the Saints marching on in top form.
