Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks head coach, openly expresses his concerns over Asenathi Ntlabakanye's upcoming doping hearing, following the prop's positive test for a banned substance. Despite not being provisionally suspended and free to play, Ntlabakanye, who debuted against Italy in Gqeberha in 2025, faces a critical period in his burgeoning career.

Ntlabakanye's hearing was initially set for December 2025 but was postponed to the end of March due to challenges in securing expert witnesses and logistical issues. This delay adds to the tension surrounding the case of Ntlabakanye, who has rapidly become one of the Springboks' key improvers, especially after shedding significant weight through rigorous training sessions with scrum coach Daan Human.

The 26-year-old prop, previously tipping the scales at 160 kilograms, managed to drop between 15 and 18 kilos, a testament to his dedication and the influence of Human.

"He really is not a big believer in talking stuff. It’s really all about action,"

Ntlabakanye praised his coach's hands-on approach to fitness and game improvement.

However, the doping allegation casts a long shadow over Ntlabakanye's achievements. Erasmus, while hopeful, acknowledges the gravity of the situation.

"I’m nervous for him because I know how he trained and tried and but then you know it’s a separate thing that we don’t have any involvement with,"

Erasmus revealed, underscoring the separation between personal effort and the legalities of the doping charge.

Despite the accusations, Erasmus remains supportive of Ntlabakanye, commending his work ethic and integrity. "He worked incredibly hard and I enjoy him as a person. I don’t think he intentionally did anything wrong," Erasmus said, adding, "I just hope he comes out on the right side of it."

This case not only tests Ntlabakanye's resolve but also puts a spotlight on the rigorous standards athletes must adhere to, highlighting the complex interplay between personal achievement and regulatory compliance in professional sports.
