In a candid assessment, Rassie Erasmus, the head coach of the Springboks, dashed any immediate hopes for three prodigious talents from the World Rugby U20 Championship-winning Junior Boks squad joining the senior ranks this year. Despite impressive performances, Bathobele Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste, and Haashim Pead, who recently joined the senior squad’s training sessions in Johannesburg, won’t see game time in the upcoming Rugby Championship.

Erasmus explained the rationale behind integrating these young players into the Springbok setup. “We’re really trying to build a deep bench while maintaining a mix of experience and youth,” he said. The coach emphasized the importance of readiness in case of injuries, which can decimate a team’s lineup unexpectedly.

“We definitely don’t see those guys playing Test matches this year, but we’re getting them used to the environment here,”

Erasmus quipped about job security and the long-term planning involved in team selection, revealing a lighter side amidst the serious business of international rugby. He stressed that the inclusion of Hlekani, Jooste, and Pead in the training camp was primarily for acclimatization and learning, not immediate deployment.

Contrary to what might be expected, these juniors were not mere spectators at the camp. Erasmus highlighted their active participation, which extended beyond physical training to include strategic sessions as well. “They take part in every single part of the training, from the boardroom to the scrum sessions,” he elaborated, underscoring a holistic approach to their development.

The integration process seems to be as beneficial for the established players as it is for the newcomers. It serves as a reminder of the fresh talent pipeline and keeps the veterans on their toes. According to Erasmus, the youngsters are keeping pace and are well-received by their more experienced teammates, indicating a promising future for these emerging stars within the robust Springbok rugby framework.
