In a shock move that has stirred the rugby world, New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has decided to sever ties with Scott Robertson, dismissing him as head coach of the All Blacks. This decision comes only two years into his four-year contract, following a detailed review of the disappointing 2025 Test season.

The review, steered by NZR chairman David Kirk along with rugby luminaries like former All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu and ex-high performance manager Don Tricker, concluded that a change in leadership was necessary. Robertson, who stepped into the role after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, had succeeded Ian Foster and boasted a commendable 74% win rate. His tenure, however, was cut short, sparking debates and speculation within the rugby fraternity.

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus expressed his astonishment at the decision.

“I was surprised. I don’t know what is going on in their camp. New Zealand Rugby knows what is best for them and the team going forward,”

he stated, highlighting his disconnect from the internal dynamics that led to Robertson’s dismissal.

Prior to his stint with the All Blacks, Robertson had an illustrious career with the Crusaders, securing seven Super Rugby titles in as many years. The stark contrast between the rugby cultures at the Crusaders and the All Blacks might have influenced the NZR's decision, suggested Erasmus. He reminisced about his own coaching experiences across various South African teams, acknowledging the challenges of aligning diverse groups under a unified vision.

“With a team (the All Blacks) with those high expectations, it is always going to be a difficult job. So was I surprised? Yes. But maybe if you know the ins and outs of the situation maybe you wouldn’t be surprised.”

As the rugby world reels from Robertson's abrupt exit, NZR has already initiated the process to find his successor, signaling a new chapter for the All Blacks as they aim to recalibrate and regain their dominant form on the international stage.
