Andre Esterhuizen, the Springboks' midfield bulldozer, recently reflected on their historic thrashing of the All Blacks, emphasizing the magic that unfolds when the team’s game plan is perfectly executed. Fresh off their rugby masterclass in Wellington, the Boks are gearing up to extend their dominance in the upcoming Rugby Championship clash against Argentina in Durban this Saturday.
Esterhuizen, who sealed the deal with the final try in their 43-10 rout over New Zealand, acknowledged the performance was stellar, yet he sees room for improvement. "It was obviously special to be part of a game like that, but there’s still so much to work on," he admitted. The powerhouse noted a marked improvement in the second half of the game, attributing it to better execution and teamwork. "In the second half, a lot of things came into our favour because we executed better and worked harder. But there were lots of errors in the first half."
"If we execute, it can be really good. Now we just need to be consistent."
With eyes now set on the face-off with Los Pumas, Esterhuizen braced for a gritty showdown. "As always with Argentina, you can expect a tough battle. It’s a tough country with tough people, so it’s always going to be physical," he said, praising the South Americans for their evolving game style filled with physicality and flair.
The South African juggernaut also touched on his own evolution as a player capable of performing both in the backline and closer to the scrum. "Luckily my size makes it easier to do that. For me it’s quite natural – obviously a few things here and there to learn still. It is quite tough up front. The forwards training session is quite different to the backs! Whether I go on at 6 or 12, I’m just happy to play," Esterhuizen shared, embodying the spirit of versatility.
As the Springboks prepare to continue their championship journey, their recent performances have not only set the bar high but have also showcased their potent combination of strategic precision and raw power. The upcoming game in Durban is not just another match; it's a testament to their ongoing quest for rugby excellence.
