Former Springbok Gio Aplon has voiced his concerns over SA Rugby's decision to extend head coach Rassie Erasmus' contract until the 2031 World Cup. Despite Erasmus' impressive track record, including consecutive World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, and a British & Irish Lions series win in 2021, Aplon fears the long-term commitment could backfire.

Speaking on the Behind the Ruck podcast, Aplon expressed his reservations about sticking with Erasmus beyond 2027.

"No other person in the world would say what I’m saying now, and yes, Rassie is the best coach at the moment, but I wouldn’t have signed him post-2027,"

Aplon remarked. He highlighted the need for fresh ideas to suit the evolving dynamics and player profiles of future rugby squads.

Aplon further elaborated on the potential pitfalls of a prolonged tenure with the same coaching staff. He cited the example of the All Blacks, where players expressed dissatisfaction under similar circumstances. "The old guard is carrying this flag. But as soon as they're out of the way with this coaching style and this group being together as a coaching staff and whatever, there’s a new breed coming through that might complain like they [the All Blacks players] complained with Razor [Robertson]," he explained.

The decision to extend Erasmus' contract also raises concerns for the career progression of local coaches within the South African system.

"For a local coach, where do you go? Like, for Dobbo [Stormers boss John Dobson], for Ackers [Bulls coach Johan Ackermann], for whoever’s here,"

Aplon questioned, worrying about the stagnation and lack of opportunities for other talented coaches in the pipeline.

Aplon's fears resonate with broader anxieties about maintaining a competitive edge and nurturing coaching talent capable of adapting to the international game's demands. As the rugby landscape continues to evolve, the decision to lock in leadership so far in advance might just be a double-edged sword for South African rugby.
