It’s time to swap scrums for jabs as former Bok front-rowers, James “Bullet” Dalton and Ollie le Roux, prepare to duke it out for a good cause this Thursday in Bloemfontein. The two rugby behemoths, known for their prowess on the field, will now test their mettle in the boxing ring during the lively Boere October Festival at President Steyn High School, with all proceeds earmarked for the school itself.

These ex-roomies and stalwarts of South African rugby are no strangers to fierce competition, having shared not only living quarters but the front lines of many a heated match. Dalton, a former Lion with a knack for fiery comments, couldn’t help but ignite some pre-match banter.

“I hope Ollie doesn’t hide in the long grass like a cheetah while the lions are out hunting,”

he quipped, referencing their respective former teams. He added,

“I know a cheetah can run fast, but I bet you didn’t know how a lion could run. I’m looking forward to the challenge in Bloem.”

On the flip side, le Roux has been hitting the gym hard, ramping up from casual workouts to a rigorous four-times-a-week regimen. Starting with modest sit-up sessions, he's now crunching through sets of 100. “It’s nice to be training again and I have a fair challenge ahead of me. James is a formidable opponent,” stated le Roux, his respect for Dalton palpable yet peppered with a readiness to rumble.

While the event promises to be a blend of sportsmanship and spectacle, le Roux clarified this isn't just for show. “It’s really just a game of chess – a guy has to have patterns,” he explained, revealing a strategic approach to the bout. “We have a plan to beat James and how to get me out of trouble if I find myself in that situation. It’s going to be a good boxing fight. We’ll go in and beat each other up. It’s not about winning, it’s about the entertainment. We’re old legends, but we’re not forgotten, and it’s going to be fun to fight each other and live out our Springbok values.” He laughed at Dalton's request for six rounds, “I think he’s crazy, but hopefully one of us can make things happen in that time.”

As these two giants of the game prepare to square off, it’s clear that while their rugby days may be behind them, their competitive spirits are very much alive and kicking – or punching, in this case. Whether you’re a fan of rugby or boxing, this matchup is set to deliver some hard-hitting entertainment, all in the name of a good cause.
