Owen Doyle, a former Test referee and erstwhile director of referees at the Irish Rugby Football Union, has launched a scathing attack on English referee Karl Dickson for his officiating during the Investec Champions Cup game between Pau and the Bulls. This match saw the Bulls clinch a 24-26 win over the Top 14 club, breaking their seven-game losing streak. Dickson's conduct, particularly in the buildup to Akker van der Merwe's try, has ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media.

Doyle expressed his disapproval in a column for the Irish Times, highlighting a controversial moment late in the first half. "Referee Karl Dickson told the ball carrier, Akker van der Merwe, to ‘use it’ – so far so good. Next, an instruction came from the referee, as he shouted ‘break away’ to the hooker while tapping the player twice before pulling on the player’s jersey, as a further ‘reminder’ to get out of there." Doyle emphasized the irregularity of the referee's actions, stating, "You might need to read that again – it was quite incredible and completely unacceptable."

"It was much to the chagrin of Pau’s Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang, whose defensive effort was obstructed by Dickson, positioned far too close to the action."

Doyle criticized Dickson further for not just the incident with Van der Merwe but also for a later event where he allegedly impeded the Pau defence before Nizaam Carr's decisive try. The match was tightly contested, and every point was crucial, highlighted by Handré Pollard's successful conversions following both controversial tries.

Moreover, Doyle accused Dickson of stepping into a 'player-coaching mode,' which he firmly believes is not part of a referee's role. "The Pau defence was badly organised, and allowed Van der Merwe an easy enough passage to touch down after he had eventually taken the heaviest of hints and left the maul," he added, pointing to a broader issue of match officiating standards.

With Dickson slated to officiate crucial upcoming Six Nations fixtures, including Ireland's clash with France and a game against Wales, Doyle's comments underline a deep concern about refereeing standards at critical moments in top-tier rugby. Doyle's parting shot was a stark warning: "Dickson will need to be a heck of a lot better when he handles our match against France."
