Stuart Hogg, the former captain of Scotland's rugby team, has found himself in handcuffs yet again. This time, he was nabbed for violating a non-harassment order against his ex-wife, Gillian Smith. This legal boundary was first put in place back in 2024 after Hogg pleaded guilty to domestic abuse charges. Recently, he was arrested upon his return to Manchester Airport from France, only to be released later without charges.
According to reports, Hogg used a designated app, meant solely for discussing their four children, to needle Smith about personal matters. "A red flag appeared on his passport as he flew into Manchester airport from France and he was collared by police," a source revealed. Despite the breach, Hogg was not charged following his arrest and interview at the Hawick station.
"He is allowed to message Gillian over an app to discuss only the kids, but once again, he’s given an inch and takes a mile,"
In the wake of these events, Smith is reportedly seeking to amend the order to restrict Hogg's communication to only go through legal channels.
Once a celebrated figure in international rugby, Hogg's illustrious career has been overshadowed by his legal troubles. The one-time fleet-footed fullback, who retired from international play in 2023, confessed at the time that he felt outpaced by his peers. His troubles off the field have only mounted since, culminating in the revocation of his MBE by the king earlier this month. "The King has directed that the appointment of Stuart William Hogg to be a Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 30 December 2023, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order," declared the UK's official public record, The Gazette.
Hogg's descent from grace is a stark reminder of how personal demons can tarnish even the most glittering of careers. As the rugby community watches one of its stars struggle, the hope remains that Hogg finds a way to navigate through his tumultuous personal life.
