Once a university circuit phenomenon, now a sensation at Sandy Park, Exeter Chiefs' winger Paul Brown-Bampoe is tearing up the turf with his formidable skills, as disclosed by former teammate and current Canadian rugby hopeful, Tiarnan, famously known as Rugby T. From his university days to his explosive performances on the professional stage, Brown-Bampoe's athletic prowess has been nothing short of spectacular.
Since his debut in the 2023-24 season, Brown-Bampoe has quickly become a staple for the Exeter Chiefs, wooing fans with his agility and power. In his rookie season alone, he dazzled the crowds by racking up 105 points, translating into 21 tries over 23 matches. This impressive feat included a jaw-dropping four tries in a single Prem Cup game against the Cornish Pirates. While this season's try count may not have hit the same high notes yet, his role as a starting winger, alongside dynamo Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, remains undisputed.
Despite being just 23, Brown-Bampoe is seen as a future international star, with eyes like those of Steve Borthwick surely monitoring his progress. But what really sets him apart are the physical feats that seem almost superhuman, feats that Tiarnan witnessed first-hand during their university days.
"He’s just a freak athlete. Naturally, probably shredded about eight to ten per cent body fat year-round, ridiculously fast, got a crazy step that doesn’t look like it should work, but still magically does,"
Tiarnan revealed in an interview with CURVA – a Free Gym App for Sports.
Not only is Brown-Bampoe's speed and agility noteworthy, but his strength in the gym is also legendary among those who knew him in his college days.
"And like even cleans ridiculous amounts (in the gym), huge bench press. The most impressive thing, I can’t remember the exact number, but he had the highest counter movement jump out of any athlete in the whole of the university. That includes athletics and stuff like that."
Tiarnan added.
The blend of raw talent and hard work has clearly paid off for Paul Brown-Bampoe, making him one of the most exciting prospects in rugby today. His journey from a university athlete to a professional star is a testament to his exceptional abilities and the thrilling potential of his future career.
