Aphelele Fassi, a beacon of talent for the Springboks, is determined to ensure that the team's past successes do not lead to complacency as they aim for a historic third consecutive Rugby World Cup victory. Despite a recent concussion setback, Fassi's spirits remain high, fueled by the relentless drive and evolving strategies within the squad under the guidance of Rassie Erasmus and Siya Kolisi.

Fassi, speaking from his experience within this top-tier team, emphasized the dynamic nature of their training sessions. "The boys are a million miles from being complacent. The coaches constantly challenge us to become better. No two weeks in camp are the same," he asserts. The team's recent performances, including clinching the Rugby Championship and triumphing on their European tour, validate their world-leading status.

However, Fassi is quick to highlight that the Springboks are not invincible, referencing their unexpected defeat to Australia and a missed opportunity against New Zealand at Eden Park. Yet, their response to these setbacks—a streak of eight wins—demonstrates their resilience and class.

"Siya has long reminded us that when you put on the Springbok jersey you not only put it on for yourself, but for the young kid that hopes to wear it one day; for the 65 million people of South Africa whose dreams we carry," says Fassi.

Fassi credits Kolisi’s mentorship as pivotal during his career's challenging phases. "That period I went through, when things were not going my way – I was not being selected, I was getting injured, needing surgery, always asking why always me? – I called Siya," he recalls. Kolisi's advice to engage more with coaches and focus equally on weaknesses as on strengths helped Fassi recalibrate his career trajectory.

Inspired early on by New Zealand’s Israel Dagg, Fassi aspired to emulate Dagg's comprehensive skill set. This admiration for an international player has only sharpened his own game, contributing to his unique style and approach on the field. Under Erasmus’s guidance, he feels empowered, a sentiment encapsulated when Erasmus tells players, "today is your day, go showcase yourself out there."

As the Rugby Championship looms, Fassi and his teammates remain focused, not on past glories but on the immediate challenge ahead. It’s a mindset that keeps them grounded and continually striving for excellence, a hallmark of true champions.
