Legendary Springboks fly-half Naas Botha has singled out Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s exceptional speed as the defining factor that edges him ahead of his fly-half competitors within the national team. Since his debut against Wales at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, the 23-year-old Stormers sensation has climbed the ranks rapidly, marking his 20th Test appearance for the reigning world champions.

Despite missing the previous year’s Autumn Nations Series due to injury, Feinberg-Mngomezulu bounced back in 2025, sharing responsibilities at fly-half with Handré Pollard and Manie Libbok against Italy and Georgia. As the Rugby Championship progressed, his performances solidified his position as South Africa’s preferred fly-half, a role he retained throughout the recent victorious Autumn Nations Series, starting in four out of five Tests.

Botha, who earned 28 caps for South Africa from 1980 to 1992, shared his insights on a DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin, emphasizing the competitive nature of the Bok’s fly-half selection.

"I don’t think Rassie’s got a favourite. I think what happened is Sacha, the way he’s playing at the moment and been playing, he sort of made himself the number one choice. That’s as simple as that,"

Botha stated. He further highlighted Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s speed as a game-changer,

"And the thing that puts him apart from the other two is he’s extremely quick. And that’s what you need, because the thing is, you give him half a gap and he’s gone."

Botha also noted the unique strengths each fly-half brings to the team. Pollard is portrayed as the more direct, reliable option, particularly in tight games that hinge on penalty kicks. Libbok, on the other hand, excels off the bench, bringing a fresh dynamic to the gameplay. The selection often depends on the midfield pairing, which Erasmus tailors based on the opposition, allowing Feinberg-Mngomezulu to adapt whether the game calls for a direct or more fluid midfield.

Botha concluded by praising Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s proactive style, "He’s definitely not hanging back in the pocket," noting his impressive try-scoring ability that sets him apart as a fearless and effective fly-half. As the young player continues to develop, his blend of speed and agility coupled with strategic gameplay under Erasmus’s guidance positions him as a central figure in shaping the future of Springboks rugby.
