On a sun-drenched Saturday in Suva, Fiji kicked off their title defense of the Pacific Nations Cup with a performance that was as dazzling as it was dominant. Despite an early scare from Tonga, who were riding high from their surprise victory over Samoa, Fiji swiftly turned the tables with a display of power and panache to bag a 32-10 win.

The game sparked into life when Augustine Pulu pierced through Fiji's defense, putting Tonga ahead in just the third minute. However, Fiji quickly regained composure; Caleb Muntz's boot leveled the scores, setting the stage for Ponipate Loganimasi and Seta Tamanivalu to light up the field with a blistering counter-attacking try. Not to be outdone, Kalaveti Ravouvou dazzled shortly thereafter, dancing through defenders to plant another Fijian flag in the match.

"Our boys showed great character to bounce back after that early try,"

noted a buoyant Fijian coach post-match.

Tonga's hopes dimmed further due to a costly yellow card shown to Siosiua Moala for a side entry, a mistake he repeated later, earning a red card and reducing Tonga to 14 men. Patrick Pellegrini did manage to slot a penalty before the break, keeping Tonga within touching distance at 17-10.

After halftime, Fiji's supremacy at the scrum and relentless breakdown work began to tell. Loganimasi's aerial prowess under a cross-kick was a prelude to Tevita Ikanivere crashing over for a critical third try, effectively cementing Fiji’s control. Despite a last-gasp effort from Tonga resulting in a disallowed try due to a knock-on, Fiji's class remained undisputed as they closed the match with a convincing victory.

The final whistle not only confirmed Fiji’s robust start to their Pacific Nations Cup campaign but also sent a resounding message about their readiness to defend their crown. The blend of tactical nous and raw physicality was too much for Tonga, who will have to regroup and rethink strategies before their next outing.
