Robbie Fleck, the former Springbok turned coach, has voiced his concerns regarding the fresh-faced Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu stepping into the flyhalf boots for the upcoming battle against New Zealand in Wellington. At just 23, Feinberg-Mngomezulu will be filling in for Handré Pollard, setting the stage alongside Cobus Reinach in a backline brimming with youthful zest, including Damian Willemse, Canan Moodie, and first-time starter Ethan Hooker.

During a candid chat on the Boks Unpacked podcast, Fleck didn't hold back on his skepticism about the new lineup's readiness. "It’s too many changes from my side, there are no solid combinations that have had time together," he remarked. The concern is palpable, especially against an unforgiving All Blacks team ready to exploit any cracks. "Nice players, exciting players, but from a defensive situation with Sacha, Damian, and Moodie, that’s a brand new combination. The All Blacks are going to pick that up and have a proper crack at them," Fleck added.

"From a game management perspective, they are going to look to Sacha for control. He hasn’t really been the guy doing that, he’s a brilliant individual rugby player, but he’s a bit like Marcus Smith at this stage. He can break the game open but he doesn’t drive the team forward yet."

Fleck, who previously steered the Stormers, pointed out that Pollard's return earlier in the season was a move to stabilize the team after a shaky start by Manie Libbok. Pollard's veteran presence and tactical nous were missed, qualities that Feinberg-Mngomezulu, despite his flair, is still mastering. Yet, Fleck also noted a silver lining when Feinberg-Mngomezulu came off the bench in Auckland. "You saw Sacha starting to do one or two incisive runs, granted it was at 12, and that’s what they’re looking for," he observed, hinting at the potential growth in the young player's game management skills.

The Springboks are certainly rolling the dice with this youthful ensemble, risking what some might call a 'flip-flop' failure. As the team prepares to face off at Sky Stadium, all eyes will be on this new generation of players to see if they can rise to the occasion or if the gamble will falter against the seasoned prowess of the All Blacks.
