After scraping past Australia with a win that barely raised any eyebrows, France is eagerly anticipating the return of their fearless leader, Antoine Dupont, as they gear up to defend their Six Nations crown. Having been sidelined with a knee injury since March, the dynamic scrumhalf is set to make a comeback for his club, Toulouse, shortly, which spells good news for France's opener against Ireland on February 5.

The 29-year-old maestro was sorely missed in France's recent fixtures, including a 48-33 victory over the Wallabies and a less-than-stellar performance against the Springboks. Under the guidance of head coach Fabien Galthie, France has struggled to meet the high expectations set for a team known for its flair and potency. "He’s the best player in the world, it’s as simple as that," stated France captain Gael Fickou.

"There’s no one better. There are good players but he has that little X factor."

Galthie pointed out the challenges of a crunched preparation schedule compared to their rivals, lamenting the mere five training sessions before their clash with the Springboks—a team that had been prepping together since June. The French Rugby Federation is now in talks with professional clubs to carve out more time for national team preparations. "It’s very hard to have the South African system, or the Australian one," Fickou remarked. "That’s how things are. We have to adapt and do better."

Meanwhile, Fickou himself is on the brink of a personal milestone, poised to earn his 100th cap for Les Bleus during their match against Wales on February 15, potentially joining the elite club of French centurions alongside Fabien Pelous and Philippe Sella.

"There are only two that have done it,"

said Fickou, who also has his eyes set on the 2027 World Cup.

Despite his leadership in Dupont's absence, Fickou faces fierce competition for his spot in the center. Up-and-comers like Nicolas Depoortere and Emilien Gailleton, as well as the Toulouse duo Pierre-Louis Barassi and Kalvin Gourgues, are making strong cases for their inclusion. With players like Yoram Moefana expected to return fit for the Six Nations, the battle for starting positions within the French squad is fiercer than ever.
