England's rugby landscape might soon witness a seismic shift if head coach Steve Borthwick can't turn the tide. Under his watch, England has plummeted to a discouraging fifth in the Six Nations standings after an unprecedented loss to Italy and a string of three consecutive defeats. Former Wallaby Jeremy Paul has thrown a stark prediction into the mix, foreseeing an ‘embarrassment’ at the hands of France that could spell the end for Borthwick.

Despite a prior 12-match winning streak, England's recent performances have been nothing short of disastrous. Speaking on the GBRANZ podcast, Paul didn't mince words about the team's prospects against France, stating,

"I know that the French are going to absolutely smack them. We’re not just talking a little bit, they’re going to embarrass the English I believe."

This match could be the nail in the coffin for Borthwick unless there's a significant turnaround.

Paul also commented on the apparent disconnection between Borthwick and his squad:

"To me the losses suggest that he has lost the changing room – that’s what it suggests to me,”

he observed. He pointed out the lack of fundamentals and aggression in defense that once defined England's play, indicating a deeper issue of morale and attitude.

While RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney has publicly supported Borthwick following the Italy debacle, such endorsements have historically been precursors to managerial exits. The rugby community has often seen this 'dreaded' vote of confidence followed by swift action.

If Borthwick were to be dismissed, Paul suggests that John Mitchell, fresh from leading the Red Roses, could be a viable interim solution. With the Rugby World Cup looming next year, a swift and effective transition could be critical. Paul remarked, "You’ve still got a year, there’s still plenty of time for a coach to come in and to be able to get a side ready for the ’27 Rugby World Cup.”

While it would be harsh to dismiss a coach who recently enjoyed a lengthy win streak, the stark decline in performance is alarming. As Paul compares the situation to other recent coaching dramas in international rugby, he underscores the urgency of proactive decision-making, “I just feel that you’ve got to make a change if he loses to France and loses to France in a bad way.”
