In the swirling maelstrom of international rugby, the South African Springboks have muscled their way to nearly mythical status, with former Springbok flyhalf and now Glasgow Warriors coach Franco Smith touting them as almost the perfect squad. As 2027's World Cup looms, Smith hints that the Boks are not just participants, but predators hunting for the title.

According to Smith, prepping to face the Springboks is enough to give even the most seasoned coaches nightmares. Their game is a blend of brute force and balletic precision, making them a formidable foe on the field. "They are an 8/10 team across the board, 10 being the maximum," Smith remarked in his chat with News24. This balance of youth and experience, carefully curated by Rassie Erasmus, has turned them into a rugby powerhouse.

"It must be difficult to prepare for the Springboks. They have a big pack of forwards; all eight of your forwards are committed to the set-piece, the maul or the scrum, which means your defence has to adapt."

The former Cheetahs head honcho isn’t shy about pointing out what makes the Boks special—they are masters of adaptation, seamlessly switching between game styles to exploit their opponents' weaknesses. "They can rip you apart from a counter-attack perspective. You get the boys turning the ball over at the breakdown, so you can’t afford not to commit. They’re physical in defence and put your decision-making under pressure because of their presence and line speed. They also handle the aerial and kicking battle really well, so it’s really tough," Smith explained.

The completeness of the Springboks’ tactical and technical game sets a high bar globally, making them the benchmark and a source of intimidation for others. "They have so much depth in each role with quality players; they can roll out top performances and can find different ways to win," Smith added, underscoring the depth and versatility of the South African squad.

As the Boks continue their tour, they'll do so without Lood, a key player sidelined for the duration. Yet, if Smith’s insights are anything to go by, the Springboks’ depth chart will likely have quality reserves ready to step in and fill those big boots.
