Gary Teichmann - My choice as captain

So the readers have spoken!

I cannot say that I disagree. Gary Teichmann was an incredible captain. His career was cut short by a silly Nick Mallet mistake, but he was undeniably a colossus as a captain and a really good player.

John Smit was a wonderful captain, but he steered the wheel of a Ferrari that Jake White built, similarly to Kolisi now.

Siya.... man.... he may not be the best loosie in the country, but he leads and has grown into the role of not only Bok captain, but ambassador supreme!

Even knobbing around didn't change peoples opinion much.

All in all, we have been blessed with solid leaders in the Bok jersey, each with theur own brand of leadership.... but they have led the Boks well.

Gary very deserving of best of the rest. Would have been my #2 pick.

Siya top without hesitation

Followed by Pienaar and Smit

I am in a very strange position of agreeing with Rooinek. Teichmann was a natural leade and that is confirmed during a number of meetings with him after he entered the business field. Mallett admitted openly that firing Teichmann was the worst thing he ever did as coach of the Springboks.

Smith was a good obedient captain who disliked White - but was afterwards honest enough to blame White for being a deficient coach. A clever guy who built a mansion costing millions in Jongesfontein - a small but very expensive town about 8 kilometers to the west of Stilbaai. Clever people know where to invest and live safely. .

Shut up David.

you just pick your captains based on World Cup wins.

what do you know about rugby?

Gazza was an incredible captain.

Nope I like Siya as a leader. Teichman was a good leader but I never rated him that highly as a player - good player but a bit light for a hard edged test 8

I’m talking captaincy here you knob.

Jun 02, 2025, 23:47

Dave, on a serious note,

in your mind… if Siya calls it a day at the end of 2025, who would your next captain be?

it’s a tough one hey. The core of our leadership are all over 30.

Pollaed maybe?

though I prefer having a forward as captain.

Pollard is not an option as potential captain - neither is Etzebeth. One cannot cahng captins early and they must be available for a lonmger period to assess continuation. On a longer term a player like Hanekom may be a better option.

In the team environment the experienced players are regarded as being prt of the Springbok on-field leadership group and continuous on-field discussion is also in evidence. So the decisionmaking on field is also influenced by messages of the xcoachibng staff by the water carriers cqrried to the leadership group is also in evidence. So the captaincy is more in evidence when to comes to what is happening on the field, The fact is that the captaincy is in fact an important position when it comes to genral public relationship involving the team as a whole.

It’s can’t really be Pollard as we have Sacha starting

If we are going to select a new captain it would make sense that it’s one of the younger players that’s a certainty to start

Ox, Wilco, RG, Hanekom, Sacha, Willemse and Arendse

Of these only Sacha has lead teams and it would be foolish making him captain

Im stumped as to who it would be

Eben and PSDT are the same age as Siya so no point going there

I am pretty sure anyone on here can guess, might not know who it will be, but it will be one with the right skin colour….

Another poster boy princess is the future, with the real Background Captains getting no recognition, but have to manage everything on field….

Unless the ANC gets abolished, then we might see another captain…

Jun 03, 2025, 12:37

Oh what a load of fucking shit - imagine being fucking stupid enough to not rate Siya as a captain

Siya in a nutshell:

  1. Really good, unbelievable motivational character
  2. Good leader
  3. Decent player

Best motivational character we have had on the sports field.

Leads well and from the front!

Far better player than Pierre Spies ever was.
