Sharks coach JP Pietersen couldn't hide his excitement after witnessing Luan Giliomee's dazzling debut in a commanding 45-0 thrashing of Munster at Kings Park. The 19-year-old rookie stormed onto the scene, notching a try and playing a pivotal role throughout the game, particularly during his team's comprehensive shutdown of the 2023 champions.

Pietersen praised the young sensation, saying,

"Gilly is a special kid, man. If you look at his schoolboy history, Craven Week, and obviously Blitzboks, he's been really good. You can see he's got BMT. He just belongs on that field and he never looked out of place. I was excited to see this kid and he showcased what he can do."

He added that Giliomee's debut was even more memorable as it coincided with Makazole Mapimpi's 100th game.

Giliomee's contribution was more than just scoring; his crucial 50:22 kick set up loosehead prop Phatu Ganyane for a try, highlighting the Sharks' burgeoning team spirit and tactical sharpness. Despite the impressive victory, Pietersen remained grounded about the team's prospects, emphasizing the need for consistency. "I'm not getting ahead of myself with this performance. We're still way off from the top eight," he remarked, indicating a rigorous review session was on the cards before their next clash against Cardiff.

The Sharks' forwards also received their share of accolades for their part in the victory, laying a robust platform upfront. Pietersen commented on their collective effort: "It takes a collective to scrum well. It's not just one guy or three guys at the front, but a collective effort from the pack of eight. They wanted to make a statement today as a pack and they made that statement."

Among the standout performers was Phatu Ganyane, whose prowess in the scrum continues to earn him praise. Pietersen highlighted his development, stating,

"You must give it to young Phatu, hey. He's only 23 and scrumming against international props. He did it against the Bulls, Stormers, and tonight against [Michael] Ala’alatoa, who's also an international prop. It’s very special to see all the hard work that Phatu's put in has come off."

The Sharks' display against Munster not only served as a breakout event for Giliomee but also as a testament to the team's growing capabilities and strategic depth, promising an exciting season ahead.
