Christie Grobbelaar, a beacon of rugby prowess with accolades like the SVNS Series, Commonwealth gold, and Olympic bronze to his name, still yearns for one thing—his debut at the Cape Town Sevens. This De Doorns native and HTS Drostdy alumnus might finally fulfill this dream as the tournament sets up camp at Cape Town Stadium this December.
Now 25, Grobbelaar has just swung back into his Springbok Sevens groove in Stellenbosch after a stint with the Sharks in the Currie Cup and his URC debut. Following a couple of grueling training days, Grobbelaar's passion for the Sevens game burns fiercely. "It's been tough to slot back in, but I'm sure I'll be fine once we play some matches this weekend," he mentioned, gearing up for the Forward Faster Sevens Invitational.
"Although I played in the Sevens World Cup in 2022, it’s weird that I have never played in the Cape Town Sevens,"
confessed Grobbelaar, who has been unlucky with injuries at critical moments in previous seasons.
These mishaps occurred during two consecutive Dubai tournaments, sidelining him just as the Cape Town leg approached. Grobbelaar humorously suggested,
"Maybe I must ask coach Philip [Snyman] to give me a pass on that game should it come up this year,"
reflecting his hope to avoid a three-peat of bad luck.
Versatility is another string to Grobbelaar's bow; he shines as a loosehead prop for the Blitzboks and a wing for his URC team. "Coach mentioned that he wants to use me at tighthead as well this season, which is fine and something I should be OK with," he shared, ready to contribute wherever needed.
After missing most of the 2025 season except for the Dubai outing, Grobbelaar's appetite to excel with the Blitzboks, the defending world champions, is more voracious than ever. "I loved my time in Durban, and the whole mission of going to the Sharks is to become a Springbok one day – I suppose that is any rugby player’s dream," he said. For now, his focus is razor-sharp on the Blitzboks and clinching that elusive Cape Town tournament cap.
The upcoming SVNS series will see the Blitzboks competing in Dubai, Singapore, Australia, Vancouver, the USA, Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux, promising an exciting season ahead.
