It's shake-up time for the Springboks as assistant coach Mzwandile Stick buzzes with excitement over Ethan Hooker's first Test start on the left wing for the upcoming slobber knocker against the All Blacks in Wellington this Saturday. With a whopping seven changes announced by head coach Rassie Erasmus, including a spruced-up backline, the Boks are clearly throwing down the gauntlet in this Rugby Championship rematch.

Ethan Hooker, a 22-year-old dynamo known for his barnstorming runs with the Sharks, is set to bring some much-needed grit to the Boks' wider channels. "We’ve tracked Ethan, we’ve seen how he was performing for the Sharks, and one thing I enjoy about him – besides his speed and physique – is his physical presence in the wider channels. That’s something we’re going to need," Stick gleefully noted. The All Blacks' prowess out wide is notorious, and Stick is banking on Hooker to be the man to meet fire with fire.

"We keep on saying it’s a young backline, but we’re just used to seeing certain names. I’m excited to see these guys get an opportunity."

The rest of the youthful backline isn't lacking in seasoning either. With the likes of two-time World Cup winner Damian Willemse, aged 27, and the talented Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who has been a part of the squad for a few seasons, Stick is confident in their capabilities. The inclusion of experienced heads like Cheslin Kolbe and Aphelele Fassi alongside Hooker adds a balanced mix of youth and experience.

Despite the fresh faces, the stakes remain as high as ever. The Springboks need to be on their A-game for a full 80 minutes to have any hope of avenging their recent defeat at Eden Park and keeping their Rugby Championship hopes alive. Stick emphasized the need for clinical execution, stating, "Against teams like Georgia or Italy, you can get away with certain things, but not in New Zealand. We have to be clinical and turn our opportunities into points."

Amidst the tactical talk, a somber note was struck by Stick as he extended his deepest sympathies to the family of former Springbok fullback Bevin Fortuin, who passed away unexpectedly. "When I heard the news, it was very, very sad. The first thing I thought about was his boy – I know how close he was with his boy and how supportive he was. And also his wife. They still had some great years ahead of them as a family," he reflected. "To lose a father at the age of 46 is heartbreaking. I feel for his family. The only thing I can say is may God protect the family, protect the wife, protect the son. I know it’s going to be tough times for them."

As the Boks gear up for battle at Sky Stadium, all eyes will be on this next generation of players to see if they can soar to victory against a formidable All Blacks side.
