Hoskins Sotutu, the dynamic back-rower set to join Newcastle Red Bulls from the Blues, has recently shared his thoughts on not yet considering playing for England despite his eligibility through his mother. The decision comes after his notable absence from the All Blacks squad under Scott Robertson’s coaching tenure, despite a stellar performance in the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Sotutu, who has appeared 14 times for New Zealand, experienced a significant period of his career during which he was not selected for the national team. "It is hard to get a spot in that team when you have Ardie Savea, the best player in the world, and Sam Cane, who is the captain," Sotutu explained. His last appearance for the All Blacks was in 2022, and despite being a top contender in terms of form, he was overlooked in subsequent selections.

"I felt like I needed to have a look at other paths."

This reflection led Sotutu to consider other international opportunities, including playing for Fiji, a homage to his father Waisake Sotutu’s legacy. However, the allure of Northern Hemisphere rugby and the new challenges it presents seemed to better align with his career ambitions at this stage. "Northern Hemisphere rugby looks like it would suit my game," he noted, indicating his excitement about adapting to a different style of play.

Moving to the Newcastle Red Bulls marks a fresh chapter for Sotutu, focusing on proving his mettle in the highly competitive PREM Rugby. "I am still really hungry to play well and I have got my best rugby ahead of me," he stated, signaling his anticipation for the opportunities that lie ahead in a new league and a new country.

Despite the potential for a future England call-up, Sotutu remains committed to the present, emphasizing his desire to excel in his immediate roles. "I like to focus on what is in front of me and if anything happens off the back of that it will be a blessing," he shared, revealing a grounded approach to his career and life.

As Sotutu prepares to integrate into his new team and city, his journey from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere is not just a transfer of clubs but also a significant cultural and tactical shift. His story is a testament to the global nature of rugby, where personal growth and new beginnings are as much a part of the game as the thrill of competition.

With his sights set on excelling every single game, Sotutu’s move could indeed pave the way for new accolades and perhaps a new national jersey. Yet, for now, he remains focused on the immediate challenge, bringing his best to Newcastle and embracing the change with open arms and an eager spirit.
