While the ball is clearly caught in front of where it was thrown, its hard to tell if its forward of if momentum of the passing playing took it forward which is allowed.
This should be a simple bit of modeling…passer speed/distance of the pass equals amount of drift allowed. There are other complications, but those are the main ones. Perhaps one day they will give the TMO a tool to quickly calculate drift.
As things stand decisions are arbitrary….that was way more forward than the de Villiers pass thrown at full pace in the 2011 WC.
The other pertinent question is why was that pass necessary. Libbok had a clear shot to the line and if the one defender turned in, an easy pass to what would then be an unmarked Willemse outside him. Much safer than the long pass, which was probably forward,
We threw quite a few long passes and none did any good except this one, and even then it was dodgy and unnecessary as you mention. No confidence to put the ball through the hands? Odd decision making.
Agree on Willemse being the easier option there yes, and Libbok could probably have successfully sold a dummy as well since Keenan was in a hopeless position.
The Boks get away with many forward passes. We don't have the skills of old. I saw many moments where a Du Preez or Morné flat, bullet pass would have set a runner away. Fluff and Earl Rose 0.1 are worse than Reinach and Lambie of 2014. That was the benchmark for mediocrity for me. What an achievement.

He was running sideways. There was very little forward momentum.

Just looking at the Kolbe try it would appear the pass was at least 5m forward. So how much momentum drift is/should be allowed on a pass?
