The aftermath of Ireland's heart-wrenching quarter-final defeat at the Women's Rugby World Cup has been overshadowed by a controversial incident, where an Irish player allegedly suffered a bite from a French counterpart. The fiery match, which concluded with a 13-18 loss for Ireland against France, escalated into a social media storm following the unsettling allegations.

The controversy centers on Aoife Wafer, the standout player of the 2025 Six Nations, who was reportedly bitten during a ruck in the second half. Visuals from the game show Wafer in a tussle, her arm apparently in the jaws of a French player. Despite Wafer's immediate report to referee Aimee Barrett-Theron, the claim seemingly fell on deaf ears, with no subsequent action taken during the game.

"I spoke to the referee, I didn’t see it,"

admitted Ireland captain Sam Monaghan post-match, highlighting the team's attempt to have the incident reviewed via the TMO.

This potential game-changing moment could have seen France reduced to 14 players, altering the dynamics as Ireland defended their slender lead. The bite, if confirmed, could carry a suspension of at least 12 weeks, underscoring the severity of the accusation.

Ireland's coach Scott Bemand was cautious in his post-match comments, focusing on the procedural aspects rather than the controversy itself.

"In terms of process, your on-pitch leadership would mention to the referee. Then it’s up to the team officials to deal with it should they see fit at that point,"

Bemand stated, adding that the team had followed the on-field process but had yet to review the incident off-field.

The match itself was a tale of two halves. Ireland, initially leading with tries from Linda Djougang and Stacey Flood, looked poised for an upset. However, the French team, resilient as ever, clawed back with crucial tries in the 59th and 67th minutes, eventually sealing their victory and a place in the semi-finals against the winner of the England versus Scotland match.

As the dust settles on the match, the focus remains sharply on the alleged biting incident, leaving both fans and officials in a state of uneasy anticipation as further investigations are awaited.
