In a dramatic reshuffle of the Ireland rugby squad, head coach Andy Farrell has had to make last-minute changes for the upcoming clash against the All Blacks in Chicago. This follows a brutal weekend in the United Rugby Championship, leaving a trail of injuries and forcing Farrell to adjust his lineup.

The initial 34-man squad, dominated by Leinster players, has been tweaked due to injuries sustained during recent matches. Notably, Mack Hansen of Connacht is out with a foot injury he picked up while scoring against the Bulls. Connacht will also miss Bundee Aki and Leinster’s Robbie Henshaw, though they will travel with the team despite their hip and groin issues, respectively. The IRFU stated,

"Bundee Aki and Robbie Henshaw will continue to be assessed and will travel with the squad on Tuesday."

The injury woes prompted Farrell to draft in Munster’s uncapped center Tom Farrell and Leinster’s Jimmy O’Brien. Farrell's recent performance for Munster, including a critical first-half try against Leinster, likely tipped the scales in his favor. This decision comes amid criticisms of Farrell's initial squad selection, which was accused of favoring reputation over current form. The criticism was especially poignant with Munster leading the URC and Leinster lagging behind. The IRFU confirmed,

"Munster's uncapped centre Tom Farrell and Leinster’s Jimmy O’Brien have been added to the Ireland squad."

The squad now consists of 22 players from Leinster, five from Munster, four from Connacht, and four from Ulster, totaling 35 active players and one cover player, Shayne Bolton from Connacht. Unfortunately, Munster's Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson were also sidelined due to concussion and elbow injuries, respectively.

Despite these setbacks, Farrell remains optimistic about the team's capabilities and the new talents joining the squad. As the team prepares to depart for Chicago, all eyes will be on how these adjustments play out on the international stage, starting with the high-stakes game against the formidable All Blacks.
