As Rassie Erasmus, head coach of the Springboks, pushes the boundaries of the team's attack strategy, former captain Jean de Villiers suggests that Springboks fans are less concerned about the style of play, emphasizing instead on the importance of securing wins, no matter the aesthetic quality. Last year, Erasmus brought in Tony Brown, a renowned attack coach, to shake things up, but the transition hasn't been seamless.

Despite the intentions to dazzle and engage more fans with a dynamic attack, the Springboks found themselves reverting to a more traditional, conservative game plan during their recent match against Australia in Cape Town, which they won 30-22. Post-match, Erasmus admitted,

"We are trying to please our crowds by winning and playing a better brand, and sometimes we get it wrong like we did last weekend. But sometimes when we get into games like this where it’s a real grind, we tend to find a way."

He acknowledged the team's struggle in more open, high-tempo matches, adding, "It's beautiful rugby, but you lose on the scoreboard."

De Villiers, weighing in on the team’s approach, noted on 'Off the Ball' that while there is a push for more entertaining rugby to attract viewers and satisfy paying fans, the ultimate goal remains victory. "I’ve generally spoken with most South Africans who prefer winning rather than losing, and even if it’s boring and ugly at times, they still prefer the win," he stated, highlighting the perennial debate between winning ugly or playing attractively.

With the influx of new coaching ideas, including inputs from Jerry Flannery and the returning Felix Jones, there's a sense that the Springboks' management is still in a phase of adjustment. De Villiers expressed concern over the potential for confusion with multiple strong personalities contributing to the strategy. "Sometimes with so many voices, it can get confusing about what have to do," he remarked, emphasizing the need for alignment in the coaching staff.

As the Springboks continue to adapt and refine their gameplay, the balance between entertaining and winning remains a delicate dance, observed closely by fans and critics alike.
