In the ever-shifting sands of Wallabies leadership, Joe Schmidt has placed his bet on Fraser McReight, despite acknowledging the timing is less than perfect. The new captain picks up the mantle amidst a backdrop of injuries and disruptions, marking him as Australia's fifth captain under Schmidt's relatively short tenure. McReight, a seasoned player with 30 caps, steps up following Harry Wilson's recent injury, thrusting him into a leadership role in a high-stakes environment.

McReight is no stranger to leadership, having captained the Australian under-20s, and his low-key style might just be the calming influence the Wallabies need. "He is a quiet leader, we don’t need someone who’s uh remonstrating or saying a lot. We just need someone who’s going to demonstrate the right performance on the field that other people can follow. And I think Fraser has demonstrated that,” Schmidt explained. This sentiment reflects a belief in actions over words, a philosophy that McReight seems to embody.

"So it was almost a continuity that I felt he finished the game well."

With Allan Alaalatoa and James Slipper also sidelined, along with Wilson and Liam Wright, Schmidt admits that the decision was somewhat forced upon him. "I wouldn’t say it was a process of elimination because that’s not fair to Fraser, but it was probably not ideal that he’s a first time captain for us but at least got a little bit of experience in the back end of the game when Harry went off," said Schmidt. Despite the less than ideal circumstances, McReight's performance against the Boks, where he led with 20 tackles and secured two turnovers, suggests he may rise to the occasion.

The Wallabies face a formidable challenge in the upcoming Test in Cape Town, particularly with the Springboks eager to avenge their previous defeat. McReight's leadership will be crucial as he navigates his first major test as captain. His ability to lead by example might just be the steadying force the Wallabies need to turn potential into victory.

As the Wallabies gear up for their clash, the spotlight isn't just on the players but also on how a 'quiet leader' like McReight will wield his influence when the pressure is at its peak.
