Plunging into a spiraling descent after a stellar 12-match winning streak, England's rugby squad faces a stern reality check. Former wing Jonny May declares the team has hit rock bottom following a series of crushing defeats in the Six Nations, casting a heavy shadow over coach Steve Borthwick's future. As they brace for a daunting clash against France, the pressure mounts, signaling a pivotal moment for English rugby.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad, and The Rugby podcast, May didn't mince words:

"It is a rock bottom moment. Rugby has that ability to chop anybody’s legs off at any point and can smack you back down to earth, and that is what’s happened,"

he explained. The team's dramatic downturn began at Scotland, a loss that May believes should have been a wake-up call, yet the subsequent matches against Ireland and Italy showed little sign of resurgence.

The critique doesn't stop with the defeats. England's tactical play has drawn ire, particularly their conservative kicking game. May suggests a shift is necessary, "You probably fall back to a kicking game when you are low on confidence or timid or under pressure, and there is definitely an argument to try and be a bit braver," he stated. This weekend against France, with nothing left to lose, might just be the time for England to rekindle their fiery spirit and take those risks.

Despite the storm clouds, May sees a silver lining, anticipating that the current pressure could somewhat ease within the squad, fostering a less burdened approach.

"The expectation and pressure, I feel like it will be lifted a little bit within that team,"

May noted, expressing hope for a unified front as the team navigates through these turbulent times.

As England prepares to face the formidable French side, all eyes will be on their performance. It's not just about salvaging pride; it's about proving that the team can rise from the depths of despair and once again compete at the highest level. For Borthwick and his squad, it's a moment to redefine their legacy—either as a fleeting shadow of their former glory or as a resilient force ready to reclaim their standing in world rugby.
