Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has openly reflected on the whirlwind of his first year with rugby union, following his high-profile transition from the NRL's Sydney Roosters to a standout role with the Wallabies. Suaalii, who made waves with a triumphant debut in the Wallabies' 42-37 victory against England, has traversed a steep learning curve since his leap into union.

Despite initial skepticism regarding his selection by Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt, without any Super Rugby experience, Suaalii silenced doubters with a stellar performance at Twickenham and continued to excel on the international stage. His adaptability was on full display as he shifted from full-back with the Waratahs to outside centre in national colours, forging a dynamic midfield partnership with Len Ikitau, who clinched the John Eales Medal as Australia’s best men’s player.

At the Rugby Australia Awards, Suaalii's efforts were recognized as he picked up the Rookie of the Year award. "It’s been a year since I’ve made my debut here… I’ve enjoyed the travel, the playing group, and a lot of things that rugby brings. Meeting new mates and playing the game as well, I’ve really enjoyed it," Suaalii shared during the awards night.

"We are growing as a team and we’re getting better by each session, each game, there’s a real trust and belief and it’s going really well,"

The transition from league to union wasn't without its challenges, particularly the extensive international travel, a stark contrast to his previous experiences. "Probably just getting used to the travel, in league you don’t really travel across the world and train there," Suaalii admitted. Despite the hurdles, he remains enthusiastic about his new challenges and the opportunities to conquer them.

While appreciative of his individual accolades, Suaalii remains team-focused. "I don’t play the game for awards. I only play to win as a team, that’s how I see it. Winning this award is a reflection of the team helping me get this award, so anything I do is just for the team, and we’re really going well," he asserted, emphasizing the collective effort over personal glory.

With 14 Wallabies caps already under his belt and a promising future ahead, Suaalii's journey in rugby union is just beginning, marked by rapid growth and a hunger for team success.
