Former All Blacks captain Kieran Read has shared his insights on the recent upheaval within the national team, emphasizing the importance of timely and open communication amongst players. This comes in the wake of Scott Robertson's dismissal as head coach following a series of less-than-stellar seasons. The decision, heavily influenced by an end-of-season review that highlighted concerns over the team's direction, has sparked a broader discussion on player involvement and the cultivation of team culture.

During a candid discussion on the Between Two Beers podcast, Read expressed his viewpoint on the situation, suggesting that issues should have been addressed much earlier. "You look at it from the perspective around culture and around needing alignment between everyone," Read remarked. The media whispers, he noted, indicated a possible misalignment within the team dynamics.

"I think as players you shouldn’t be getting to that. You should be proactive and what you can try and achieve in this team, and that’s really about having conversations that need to be had."

With the All Blacks now under the guidance of Dave Rennie, Read sees a critical opportunity for the players to assert themselves and actively shape the team's future. The upcoming Test season, featuring four matches against the Springboks in what is dubbed 'The Greatest Rivalry' series, presents a perfect stage for this new beginning.

"With Dave Rennie coming in, you've got three games and then you’re going to one of our greatest rivals. It’s the best tour, that would be so awesome to play on that tour," Read enthused. He stressed the necessity for players to "find their voice" and engage proactively with the new coaching framework to ensure alignment and commitment.

Reflecting on his experiences with Robertson at the Crusaders, Read also touched upon the potential long-term benefits of these challenging times for Robertson. "I just look at it from the perspective of being a mate and you feel for him," he shared, hinting at the growth and learning that can stem from such professional setbacks.

As the All Blacks navigate through this transition, the emphasis lies heavily on the players to step up and embrace their roles not just on the field, but in the locker room and beyond. This proactive approach could very well dictate the success of Rennie's tenure and set a precedent for handling team dynamics in professional sports.
