As the All Blacks gear up for their clash against England at Twickenham, Sir John Kirwan has sounded the alarm: step up, or see your Grand Slam aspirations crumble. This Saturday, Scott Robertson's squad must surpass their recent performances, having scrapped past Ireland and Scotland, to tackle their biggest challenge yet on this northern hemisphere tour. England, rejuvenated under Steve Borthwick and riding a nine-match winning streak, won't make it easy.

England’s recent triumphs over the Wallabies and Fiji hint at a team finding its groove. For New Zealand, a victory here is crucial with only a struggling Wales team remaining in their path. Kirwan, speaking on the Rivals podcast, emphasized the clash of styles awaiting at Twickenham.

"It’s a competition of two DNAs. We need to run them around, make sure we’re running them from right to left. But to do that, you need to get your error count down and be really disciplined."

Despite leading 17-0 at halftime, the All Blacks nearly faltered against Scotland last week. The Scots rallied to tie the game, setting a tense stage before Damian McKenzie’s heroics secured New Zealand a narrow escape. Kirwan reflected on the pendulum swing during the match:

"I thought our first half was really dominant and then the Scottish came out second half and were very, very good. I liked the composure when it was 17-all. Damian McKenzie was outstanding. That 50/22 was unbelievable, got us down there and then that miracle try."

The All Blacks' younger players have stepped up, particularly in the second-row where injuries have forced changes. "I was really happy for our locks. Josh Lord was outstanding, and with Fabian [Holland], I saw footwork this weekend, which means this kid is really working hard on his game," noted Kirwan. Despite the positives, Kirwan admitted discipline was a concern, with three yellow cards in their last outing hinting at potential vulnerabilities.

With England making seven changes, including the introduction of George Ford, the stage is set for a titanic showdown. As Kirwan puts it, Twickenham’s imposing atmosphere is the perfect backdrop for what could be a Grand Slam-defining moment. The All Blacks will need to muster all their might and mettle to overcome an English side that’s hitting its stride at just the right time.
