Despite bulldozing past Georgia with a 55-10 win at Mbombela Stadium, the Springboks' performance left much to be desired, according to none other than captain Siya Kolisi. The team grappled with consistency and momentum in a game that saw them lead only 22-10 at the midway point before finally finding their stride in the second half. With Kolisi back at the helm after sitting out three earlier matches due to injury, the Boks faced a tougher-than-expected challenge from the spirited Georgian side.

Kolisi did not mince words about the initial struggle, particularly noting the physicality of the Georgians.

"Physically they matched us most of the time, and we struggled at the breakdown. They were quite dominant there,"

Kolisi remarked. The captain expressed relief over improvements post-half-time but was critical of the team's inability to string together consecutive positive plays without errors that stalled their momentum.

The match also marked a significant moment for new blood in the Springboks squad, with Rassie Erasmus, the head coach, injecting fresh talent following a resounding victory against Italy. Newcomers Boan Venter, Neethling Fouche, and Marnus van der Merwe not only made their test debuts but also left a strong impression, with van der Merwe bagging a double and Venter scoring a try. Edwill van der Merwe and Cobus Wiese also stepped up, continuing their form with the former scoring twice.

The influx of new players has apparently ignited a fierce competition within the squad, something Kolisi views as beneficial.

"I am happy for them [the debutants]. Congratulations to them and their families,"

he acknowledged. He further elaborated on the internal competition, stating, "The coach is building squad depth while we are winning, and you can see the amount of competition in the group. The guys (who played) last week set the standard. In the first half here we didn’t live up to that standard and had to pick it up in the second half. So competition is tight and everyone who gets an opportunity has got to take it. But that’s what keeps the squad fresh and on their toes."

As the Springboks look forward to future matches, the blend of veteran savvy and rookie vitality is poised to be their formula for maintaining dominance on the rugby field, provided they can iron out the inconsistencies flagged by their captain.
