With a string of injuries and a less-than-glorious Currie Cup season so far, Western Province might just get a helping hand from their Stormers brethren in the URC as they gear up to clash with the Boland Cavaliers this Saturday. Still hunting for their first win of the season, and with just one game left, desperation is starting to look like the understatement of the year for WP.

Last Saturday, the Pumas handed WP a bruising 39-13 defeat in Cape Town, marking their sixth consecutive loss and securing their unfortunate claim on this season's wooden spoon. Looking ahead, the team faces a daunting task against the Cavaliers, who not only are eyeing the semi-finals but also have lost only two of their six matches thus far. "We must do our best to get a win. It'll turn into a tough ask if our neighbours start becoming negative, but we need to think of all the positives that’ll flow out of a win in our last game on Saturday,” said Labeeb Levy, the man at the helm of WP's ship.

"We must do our best to get a win. It'll turn into a tough ask if our neighbours start becoming negative, but we need to think of all the positives that’ll flow out of a win in our last game on Saturday."

Observing the moves of other big teams, Levy noted, “It’s quite obvious what the big teams across the country are planning. There will most likely be a step in the same direction. We’ll have to look at it strategically because WP is a proud rugby union and we want to see that our teams do well. We are looking for solutions.” The match against the Lions saw several URC stars play in the Jukskei derby against the Vodacom Bulls, which yielded good results, hinting that WP might follow suit.

The injury toll from Saturday’s game further complicates matters for WP. Hooker Scarra Ntubeni and centre Damian Markus are nursing leg injuries, and scrumhalf Ezekiel Ngobeni was seen limping off the field with a suspected knee injury. As they prep to host the Cavaliers, a team with an impressive record and a stronghold in Wellington, the pressure mounts.

The situation may look bleak, but hope springs eternal in the hearts of the Western Province faithful. With possible reinforcements on the horizon, and a final showdown at their doorstep, it’s all to play for in the Currie Cup's dramatic conclusion.
