Oh, what a day at Loftus Versfeld! The Lions finally quenched their thirst for a win at this fortress, marking their first triumph here since March 2023. With an action-packed 43-33 victory over the Vodacom Bulls, they didn't just win; they climbed above their Gauteng rivals on the Vodacom URC log. It was a bonus-point win that had fans on the edge of their seats!

The game kicked off evenly but it was the Lions who drew first blood with a Chris Smith penalty. The Bulls applied pressure but to no avail, as the Lions snatched a loose ball which Kelly Mpeku, fresh from his birthday celebrations, booted ahead into open space, chased it down, and dove over the line for a try. Smith's conversion shot the Lions into a 10-0 lead.

The Lions extended their lead with Nico Steyn finishing a brilliant team effort. Ruan Venter handed off a sharp pass in contact allowing Steyn to dive over. Smith was spot on again, making it 17-0. The Bulls weren't just spectators though; Embrose Papier quickly added two tries, with Keagan Johannes converting both, tightening the score to 17-14.

The first half wrapped up with the Lions slightly ahead at 22-19, after a flying finish from Jarod Cairns and a maul-powered try by Bulls' Akker van der Merwe.

The second half saw the Lions' defense tested but they held strong, winning a crucial scrum penalty. Soon after, Bronson Mills landed a spectacular 50-22 kick, shifting the momentum. Etienne Oosthuizen capitalized on this with a try, extended further by Smith's conversion for a 29-19 buffer.

The Lions didn’t let up, with Eduan Keyter and Steyn widening the gap. Despite late tries by Johannes and De Klerk for the Bulls, the Lions had already done enough to secure the win.

"We remained focused on our game plan, and it paid off with a crucial victory," Chris Smith remarked post-match.

Looking ahead, the Lions are set to host Benetton in the EPCR Challenge Cup, while the Bulls prepare for a clash against Bordeaux Bègles. This match wasn't just a win for the Lions; it was a statement.
