On a brisk Saturday at Ellis Park, the Lions not only clawed but roared their way to a dominant 44-5 triumph over the Bulls, effectively shattering the latter's Currie Cup semi-final dreams. This hefty victory propelled the Lions to a comfortable second in the standings, while the Bulls lingered in sixth place after their fourth consecutive loss, a whopping 11 points adrift of the playoff contention.

The Lions, brimming with URC-seasoned players, entered the game as the clear favorites. Contrarily, the injury-plagued Bulls opted to field junior and club players, presumably preserving their key players for the upcoming URC season. The match commenced with a bang as Lions flyhalf Chris Smit, facing his old squad, quickly racked up a 10-0 lead courtesy of a penalty and a slick converted try.

Despite a fleeting spark of resistance from the Bulls' Jaco van der Walt, who scored a try, the Lions kept up their momentum. A subsequent penalty from Smit and a try by loosehead prop SJ Kotze widened the gap to 20-5 by halftime.

"It was a textbook start for us, exactly what we planned,"

noted Lions captain PJ Botha, who later bulldozed over from a lineout maul, capitalizing on a sin-bin penalty against Bulls prop Simphiwe Matanzima for a no-arms tackle.

The game's intensity didn't wane as it progressed into the second half, with both teams temporarily reduced to 14 men due to high tackles. Amidst the chaos, Lions midfielder Richard Kriel secured a bonus-point try, further solidifying their lead.

The spectacle didn't end there. Shortly after Junior Boks scrumhalf Haashim Pead debuted, his swift play helped set up fullback Quan Horn, who assisted replacement flyhalf Sam Francis for another Lions' try. The Bulls found themselves further handicapped down to 13 men following Marco Ferreira's sin-binning, allowing Pead to sneak over for his first senior provincial try in the dying moments.

As the dust settled, the scoreboard read a resounding victory for the Lions, who now look forward to their final league-stage match against Griquas at Ellis Park. The Bulls, on the other hand, are set to regroup and face the Cheetahs at Loftus in a bid to salvage what remains of their season.

LIONS: Tries: Chris Smit, SJ Kotze, PJ Botha, Richard Kriel, Sam Francis, Haashim Pead. Conversions: Smit (2), Francis, Kriel. Penalties: Smit (2).
