On a bustling Saturday at Ellis Park, the Lions roared loudest, dismantling the undefeated Ulster in a spectacular display of rugby prowess. The scoreboard lit up like a Christmas tree in a 49-31 triumph, marking a high-octane encounter with 12 tries thrilling the crowd. Flyhalf Chris Smith was instrumental, booting 14 points to steer his team towards a much-needed resurgence in their URC campaign.

The match kicked off with a frenzy of tries, setting the tone for what was to come. Lions' hooker SJ Kotze bulldozed his way through for the opening score. Not to be outdone, Ulster's Robert Baloucoune dazzled with a brilliant solo run to even the odds. The tit-for-tat continued with Lions' Eduan Keyter slicing through following a monstrous scrum, catching a slick inside pass from Quan Horn to retake the lead. "All-out attack at Ellis Park," the crowd might have thought as the scoreboard read 14-7.

Ulster's response was swift, with James Hume slicing through after a nifty chip kick, but the Lions' tenacity shone through. Despite a yellow card to Asenathi Ntlabakanye slowing their momentum, Smith's penalty kept them in the hunt. However, Baloucoune's second try edged Ulster ahead by halftime.

The second half saw the Lions shift gears. Ruan Venter's try reclaimed the lead for the Lions, and Smith's boot extended it. Though Baloucoune completed his hat trick, the Lions' forward pack began dictating terms. Renzo du Plessis and later Henco van Wyk, along with a double from Conrad van Vuuren, sealed the deal in a dominant closing chapter.

"We knew we had to up the ante in the second half, and the boys delivered spectacularly,"

said Ivan van Rooyen, clearly elated with the performance.

The victory not only handed Ulster their first defeat but also catapulted the Lions up the standings, setting up intriguing fixtures ahead. As the tournament takes a brief hiatus, the battles will resume with Ulster facing Benetton and the Lions visiting Loftus.
