Liam Williams, the former Newcastle Red Bulls fullback, has opted to hang up his boots, closing the chapter on a storied rugby career that has left an indelible mark on the sport. At 34, the Welsh rugby icon retires with 93 international caps, a Grand Slam, and critical roles in two British and Irish Lions tours under his belt.

Having clinched Premiership and Champions Cup titles with Saracens and a PRO14 title with the Scarlets, Williams' club career has been equally illustrious. His brief stint with the Red Bulls saw him make only three appearances following his move from Kubota Spears Newcastle. Despite limited playtime due to injuries, Williams remained optimistic about his impact, stating, "I’ve loved my time as a professional rugby player... Unfortunately, injuries have meant I have not been able to contribute on the field as much as I would have liked during my time in Newcastle."

Expressing gratitude to his last club, he added, "I would like to thank the club and our supporters for making my family and I feel so welcome during our time in the North East. It's a great club with a really exciting future, and despite my own playing opportunities being limited due to injury I hope I have been able to contribute positively behind the scenes towards the continued growth of the squad."

"One of the best players of his generation"

Neil McIlroy, the sporting general manager, praised Williams, saying, "Liam will rightly be regarded as one of the best players of his generation. He has been a consistent winner at club and international level for more than a decade, and despite injuries limiting his playing opportunities during his time in Newcastle, he has been a model professional in supporting and developing the players around him."

McIlroy also highlighted Williams' foundational role at the Newcastle Red Bulls, emphasizing his ongoing legacy, "He has been part of the first wave of Newcastle Red Bulls players, who will always be welcome here, and will hopefully remain strong ambassadors for our club and its ambitions."

As Williams transitions into post-player life, the rugby world watches eagerly, expecting him to continue influencing the game in new ways. Meanwhile, the sport continues to celebrate his remarkable career, which has been a blend of grit, skill, and an undying passion for rugby.
