This Saturday, the Lions will have to roar without a key Springbok player, as flank Ruan Venter is sidelined for their Vodacom URC bout against the Stormers at Ellis Park. The unfortunate news follows Venter's delayed onset of concussion symptoms after their recent triumph over the Sharks. Fresh off a four-game suspension, Venter's comeback was cut short when he began showing symptoms post-match, despite initially passing his Head Injury Assessment.

Lions' defence coach Jaque Fourie lamented the loss, stating,

"The only injury absentee is Ruan Venter. He came off in the game and passed his test, but then later on Sunday, he came back with symptoms."

Fourie highlighted Venter's critical role in the team's dynamics, "He's vital for us in how we play, giving us momentum and stopping momentum."

Stepping into Venter's boots will be none other than Batho Hlekani, who Fourie believes is ready to make an impact. "There are guys who are going to step into his shoes, like Batho [Hlekani]. He’s one of the guys who gives momentum and stops momentum; he just needs to pick up his hand again this weekend."

With the pitch expected to be a swampy mess come game day, the Lions are also tweaking their scrumhalf lineup to adapt. Fourie revealed, "There will be rotation. I think the game is going to be wet on Saturday; we are prepping for a wet game. Nico [Steyn] has a good kicking game and is very physical." He further elaborated on their scrumhalf strategy while juggling their options, "We have got three amazing scrumhalves. With Krappie [Morne van den Berg] being with the Springboks, you always want to play him, and then we rotate Nico and Hash [Haashim Pead] to keep them fresh."

The Stormers, on the other hand, are buoyed by the return of their formidable forward duo, ready to challenge the Lions on their home turf, a venue where they have historically enjoyed success. It’s set to be a gripping encounter, with both teams eager to assert their dominance in the wet and wild conditions expected at Ellis Park.
