Rugby Australia's fiscal landscape has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the financial windfall from last year's British and Irish Lions tour. The union, grappling with financial challenges post-Rugby World Cup 2023, announced a record operating surplus of $70 million for 2025, effectively erasing its debts.

The tour, orchestrated under the guidance of Andy Farrell, encompassed nine games and was a primary contributor to the year's total revenue of $262.2 million. This influx of income not only allowed Rugby Australia to settle an $80 million loan but also to start building a robust financial foundation for future endeavors, including the upcoming Rugby World Cups in 2027 and 2029.

At the annual general meeting in Sydney, Rugby Australia highlighted the strategic reset undertaken in 2024, which paved the way for this financial turnaround. "Following a comprehensive reset of the organisation in 2024, Rugby Australia exceeded projections with a $70.6 million surplus and cash reserves of $31.4m in 2025, providing the foundation for a sustainable and successful operating model into the future," the statement read.

"This is an historic and energising period for Australian rugby, and a record operating surplus allows us to look ahead to the future with clarity and confidence,"

said Phil Waugh, Rugby Australia’s managing director and CEO. He further emphasized the strategic financial management that has set the stage for long-term prosperity. "We have made great progress in ensuring the proceeds of our major events – including last year’s record-breaking British & Irish Lions tour – will set up our game to thrive long-term."

The 2025 season not only marked a financial success but also saw record attendance figures. A total of 373,168 fans attended the Wallabies' seven domestic Tests, averaging 53,308 per match, an all-time record for a non-home Rugby World Cup season. The highlight was the staggering 90,307 crowd at the MCG for the second Test against the Lions. Additionally, both Super Rugby Pacific attendance and ratings showed significant growth, with a 6% increase in attendance and a 27% rise in viewership on Stan Sport.

Rugby Australia's chair, Daniel Herbert, reflected on the unity and alignment within Australian rugby, stating,

"An aligned and united Australian rugby can achieve great things, and it is therefore pleasing that, together with our member unions and key stakeholders, Rugby Australia is today announcing a strong result for 2025."

He expressed optimism about the strategic direction and the sustainability of the model that is being built for Australian rugby as they gear up for the men's and women's Rugby World Cups hosted on home soil in the coming years.

This period of financial and operational revitalization marks a new chapter for Australian rugby, characterized by resilience, strategic foresight, and a community deeply connected by the love for the game. As the sport faces forward, the foundations laid in these pivotal years promise to bolster Australian rugby on the world stage, ensuring its vibrancy and viability for future generations.
