Ellis Park is set to witness a fierce battle this Saturday in the Vodacom URC, but the Lions will be stepping onto the pitch without two key Springboks. Morné van den Berg, the dynamic scrumhalf, is sidelined due to a leg injury sustained last week against Edinburgh, forcing him off the field in the second half. With van den Berg out, Nico Steyn is expected to fill the scrumhalf slot, supported by Haashim Pead warming the bench.

In another blow to the Lions, tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye is also unavailable, pending a career-defining hearing after a positive test for a banned substance last year. The void left by Ntlabakanye will be filled by young gun RF Schoeman, who is set to don the No 3 jersey. The Lions' coaching staff is showing full confidence in Schoeman's ability to rise to the occasion.

"Asenathi is very important to us. He brings physicality and also leadership to the team,"

explained Lions scrum coach Julian Redelinghuys.

"But when he is not here, the other guys have to take advantage of the opportunity they get. That is the only way the young guys grow."

Redelinghuys also highlighted Schoeman's raw, untamed energy in play, especially in the looser aspects of the game, likening his style to that of a 'wild dog.'

"RF is a young prop who has played in many matches. He is still learning in every match,"

Redelinghuys added.

"The set-pieces are the part of his game in which he still needs to learn the most; in the loose he plays like a wild dog."

With these strategic substitutions, the Lions are gearing up to face the Dragons with a blend of seasoned strategies and raw, youthful vigor. This match is not just about defending home turf at Ellis Park but also about proving the resilience and depth of their squad amidst adversities.
