When Lood de Jager's shoulder came into frightening contact with Thomas Ramos' head during the recent France-Springboks showdown, the rugby world erupted. The incident, just shy of halftime in Paris, saw referee Angus Gardner, with a little help from the TMO, send de Jager off with a permanent red card for what was described as an "always illegal" tackle. Former Irish ref Owen Doyle didn't mince words about it, stating in his column that the decision was spot on.

Doyle pointed out, "De Jager's action certainly merited the dismissal." He highlighted the ongoing struggle with the interpretation of 'intentional' across different rugby cultures, particularly noting the pressure from southern hemisphere's stakeholders to reserve red cards for only the most egregious violations. This, according to him, complicates the job for officials who are caught in the crossfire of regional disagreements on foul play.

"It was not just a cheap shot, De Jager had a clear line of sight from a long way out. His action was brutally dangerous with no mitigation to be found."

Doyle dismissed any defense that Ramos' low position somehow excused the severity of de Jager's tackle. The critique extended to those suggesting that the lack of a head injury assessment (HIA) for Ramos meant the incident wasn't severe. Doyle countered, "Do those who peddle this reasoning really believe that the level of injury should dictate the punishment?" He argued that given the nature of the hit, a HIA would have been more than justified, questioning France's decision to forego it.

The outcry over the red card was particularly loud among South African fans and pundits, with former All Blacks voicing that a straight red was excessive. Meanwhile, Nick Mallett described the Boks as courageous but labeled the red card as harsh. Amidst this controversy, Doyle urged World Rugby to stand firm and support the officials' judgment with a clear statement.

This incident has not only sparked debates over the tackle itself but also highlighted the varying perspectives on player safety and disciplinary actions across the rugby world. As the dust settles, the implications of de Jager's red card will likely echo throughout the sport, prompting calls for clarity and consistency in how such incidents are handled in the future.
